The Who have been immortalised in a special Royal Mail stamp collection.

The Pinball Wizard legends have been selected for a new set of stamps to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

The Royal Mail has announced that 12 special stamps will be issued to mark six decades since the iconic rock band first formed.

In a statement, Roger Daltrey said: "The artwork on the album sleeves was almost as important to the success of the record as the music. It’s great to be reminded of them.”

Eight of the stamps will feature some of their iconic album covers, from 1965's My Generation right through to 2019's WHO.

Other records represented in the collection include Tommy (1969), Who's Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973), Who Are You (1978), Face Dances (1981), and Endless Wire (2006).

Of the other four stamps, two come from live performances, taken at a 1967 show at London's Marquee Club and Kings Hall, Belle Vue in Manchester in 1973.

The remaining two stamps are from promotional shoots.

Pete Townshend joking that his own on-stage "stamping" was finally being "honoured properly".

He added: "Stamp! Stamp! Stamp! It’s what I’ve done on stage all my life, sometimes in the air.
"At last, my stamping, and that of my buddy Roger, has been honoured properly, and will help letters, parcels and birthday cards travel through time and space, just as we have.”

The collection now makes them the seventh music act to get their own set of Royal Mail stamps, following Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden and the Spice Girls.

The stamps and other collectable products are available to pre-order now, with a special Presentation Pack featuring all 12 stamps costing £22.80.

The stamps will go on general sale on October 17.
