Recent research suggests that the ability to stand on one leg is one of the first fitness markers to decline as we age.

Now, the UK’s National Health Service has shared what it says are the normal lengths of time that you should be able to stand on one leg, depending on your age group., to be considered “normal”, or ageing at an average rate.

To test yourself, you must stand on one leg with your hands on your hips and eyes open. The timer stops when you either lower your foot or take your hands off your hips.

Here’s how long you should aim for:

  • 18-39: 43 seconds
  • 40-49: 40 seconds
  • 50-59: 37 seconds
  • 60-69: 30 seconds
  • 70-79: 19 seconds
  • 80+: 5 seconds

The NHS adds that those who struggle to balance for the expected amount of time are at a higher risk of developing ill-health as they age.
